About the Event
In the Mouth of the Jaguar is an upcoming exhibition that invites contemporary Latin American and diasporic artists to reinterpret and reimagine pre-Columbian and Indigenous mythologies—gods, monsters, heroes, and cosmologies—through the lens of modern identity, technology, migration, and resistance.
The jaguar—guardian, predator, shapeshifter—is a powerful symbol across Mesoamerican and Amazonian cultures, representing the crossing of thresholds: between life and death, history and prophecy, nature and spirit. The exhibition’s title refers to this liminal space: a portal for transformation, where ancient myths become living narratives relevant to today’s struggles.
We are not looking for static depictions of heritage. Instead, we seek works that remix ancestral stories with urgency and imagination—addressing climate change, colonization, diaspora, gender, language, and futurism.
